The Plate Method After Bariatric Surgery

One of the main facilitators of weight loss after any bariatric surgery is the built-in portion control provided by the smaller gastric sleeve or pouch. Did you know, in the early weeks following surgery, it can be difficult to fit more than three or four ounces (or about 1/3 cup) of food in the stomach at any given time?

Prioritize Protein

We prioritize protein throughout the entire diet progression (and lifelong) for two reasons:

  1. Our cells use protein to rebuild and heal.
  2. Our muscles use protein to remain intact and strong.

With the restricted room in the new stomach and the importance of protein after surgery, for the first few weeks, protein might be the only food group that fits comfortably in the healing gastric pouch.

Here are some examples of lean proteins:

  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Poultry
  • Lean cuts of meat (e.g., loin or round, 85-95% lean ground meats)
  • eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Non-dairy milk or reduced fat milk

Get creative and incorporate some plant-based proteins as well:

  • Beans
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Nut butters
  • Lentils
  • Tofu
  • Veggie burgers

Veg out with Veggies

Non-starchy vegetables are your next priority after protein. Most people have room for these in their stomach around three months post-surgery. This group provides a variety of micronutrients and fiber. Work your way up to ½ cup or more of foods, to include these options:

  • Leafy greens
  • Bell peppers
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumbers
  • Squash
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli, etc.

Chose vegetables of all colors to get the best variety.

Consume Carbs to Fuel Your Way Forward

Lastly, work carbohydrates onto your plate. Most people can fit these in around six months post-surgery. Make sure at least half of your grain choices come from whole grains. Chose items, such as the following:

  • Whole wheat bread and pasta
  • Rice
  • Quinoa
  • Potatoes

This is the time to start including fruit back into your meals as well. Gradually increase your portion size of these foods, maxing out at ¼ cup per day.

Make Lifelong Healthy Living Your Goal

There is room on a balanced plate for the enjoyment of all food groups: protein, vegetables and carbohydrates. As you heal from bariatric surgery, the gastric pouch matures and can accommodate more volumes and variety. Lean protein will always be your priority, followed by vegetables, then carbohydrates. Make food choices that will serve your health goals and promote a safe and comfortable post-operative meal!
