Starting Fresh (and Healthier) in the New Year

It’s that time again.

Many of us have spent several weeks being out of our normal routine, navigating too much food, stress, and travel while not getting enough sleep.

“Detoxing” from the Holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time of the year, but they can often leave us physically and emotionally drained. It’s only natural that we want to get back to our usual selves as quickly as possible – and a 48 hour detox sounds like just the thing.

A quick Google search of “detox” yields 300 million hits in under a second (yes, that’s million, and it’s up from 214 million when I did the same search a year ago). Fortunately, the holidays haven’t actually created an abundance of toxins that we must clear out with food. Unfortunately, we probably feel tired, bloated, and in need of some sort of reset.

What we really need to feel back to normal is enough sleep, balanced meals, and some patience.

In the meantime, if you want to mix up those balanced meals, try some trendy vegetable dishes in lieu of a cleanse. Instead of making a resolution to cut out carbs, aim to include at least one vegetable side at each dinner.

Rather than buying supplements or shakes, walk down the freezer section in the grocery store to check out all the new options for frozen vegetables like veggie spirals made with beets and riced kohlrabi.

And sip some hot tea in the evenings, but only if you like it, not because it will help you detox.
