Concussions 101: Learning How to Manage a Concussion

A concussion is caused by a blow to the head. It is basically an energy problem in the brain.  The active areas of the brain are not getting the right amount of energy where and when they need it.

A professional trained in concussion management will be able to help you identify the areas impacted for you or your child. Therefore, it is important to seek treatment early and begin an active recovery program.

Symptoms of a Concussion

Symptoms of a concussion may include one, some, or all of the following:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • sleepiness

Recommendations for Recovering from a Concussion

#1 – Keep your doctor’s appointment.

It is very important to keep your your appointments with the doctors helping you recover. They will be able to tell you when it is safe to return to sports and other activities.

#2 – Get plenty of rest.

Create a sleep schedule, and stick with it. Go to bed at the same time every night. Get up at the same time every day. Try to minimize napping, especially once you are 2-3 days post-injury.

#3 – Eat a balanced diet.

Eat three balanced meals a day. Do not skip meals, especially breakfast.

#4 – Drink plenty of water.

Keep water with you so you can drink lots of water throughout the day.

#5 – Exercise.

Be sure to get some exercise every day, but no rigorous exercise or contact sports until you are cleared by your doctors. Walking is great. You can then progress your activity when your doctor tells you it is okay.

#6 – Control stress.

Do your best to minimize stress during your recovery. Stress can make your symptoms worse! Be mindful of the things that “set you off” and ask for support when you need it. In addition, stay social! It can be a healthy way to cope.
