You may have heard that the American Heart Association recently made a change to blood pressure guidelines. This important change is the first in 14 years and reflects the results of several long-term studies (including the SPRINT study) which show that there are lower rates of cardiovascular events when blood pressure is controlled to lower levels.
3 Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure
Here are a few things you can do today to help lower your blood pressure:
#1 – Reduce sodium intake.
Prepare meals at home when possible. Flavor foods with herbs, spices, lemon, lime or garlic, and limit all salt shakers (including sea salt).
#2 – Increase potassium intake.
Aim for 5-9 servings of fruits/vegetables per day and include beans, (unsalted) nuts, seeds and fish.
#3 – Take 5 minutes to relax.
Try imagery, deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation exercises.
