WakeMed Employee Shares Excitement for 2014 Scrub Run

This Saturday, June 21, WakeMed will host the 2014 WakeMed Scrub Run 5K/10K & Fun Fest in downtown Raleigh. We’re expecting sunny weather, energetic runners and walkers, and a great day to raise money for WakeMed Children’s. The entire community is invited to convene in Raleigh’s City Plaza to enjoy this festive, family-friendly event which will also include games and activities for all, face painting, arts & crafts for the kids, live music and food. Registration for the races is still open – click to sign up now.

Harriet Stephenson (fourth from left) and her co-workers enjoy the WakeMed Scrub Run in 2011.

One WakeMed employee who has already signed up for the race is Nursing Education director Harriet Stephenson, RN. She and others from her department will make up a team they call the “Scrub Crawlers.” Stephenson and her colleagues also participated in the 2011 Scrub Run. Below she tells us why she enjoys the event so much and why others should get involved.

Q. In what way will you participate in the WakeMed Scrub Run this year?

A. I joined the Scrub Crawler team (Nursing Education department), and we have participants running in the 10K and 5K and walking the 5K. I personally will be walking the 5K.

Q. Why are you excited to participate in the WakeMed Scrub Run?

A. I love bringing WakeMed to the community and the community to WakeMed! We are so much more than a hospital, and this is just one small way we can have fun with the community while supporting healthy lifestyles and WakeMed Children’s.

Q. You participated in the 2011 event.  What did you enjoy about it?

A. I loved interacting with the community as well as with co-workers outside of work. I met many [co-workers’] family members and friends and lots of children. I also enjoyed hanging around after the race for all the games, music and activities. Such a fun day! I have been out of town the past couple of years which has kept me from participating, but I am glad to be a part of it again this weekend.

Q. Why is this event so beneficial to WakeMed?

A. Proceeds from the Scrub Run will benefit the WakeMed Children’s Hospital – it’s for the kids! Besides supporting the Children’s Hospital, it is an opportunity for WakeMed to interact with the community and lead by example; also a fun way to be active and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Q. Why would you encourage other employees and community residents to get involved?

A. It’s FUN! You don’t have to run or walk as you can have a great time just being in the mix, enjoying the activities and meeting others from your community.  See you Saturday!
