Wound Care Center Opens in Cary

In July, WakeMed will open Cary’s first and only outpatient Wound Care Center, in addition to two new hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Before now, patients in western Wake County who needed specialized wound care or hyperbaric oxygen therapy were often sent to Raleigh or outside of the county. This new service means comprehensive care, closer to home for patients with hard-to-heal wounds. Led by a multidisciplinary team that includes board-certified vascular surgeons, podiatrists, general surgeons, foot and ankle specialists, orthopedic surgeons and breast surgeons, the Center offers:

  • Diagnostic testing (can include vascular testing, blood tests, x-rays)
  • Nutritional evaluation
  • Infection control
  • Specialized dressings
  • Pressure-relieving devices
  • Debridement (removal of dead or infected tissue)
  • Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy
  • Patient education

“The southeast has the highest amputation rates of any region in the United States due to numerous factors, including a higher incidence of obesity, diabetes and tobacco use,” explains Dr. Jacek Paszkowiak, MD, FACS, vascular surgeon and co-director, WakeMed Wound Care – Cary. “Improving access to coordinated wound care services can help patients get the specialized care they need to improve their quality of life and to help avoid serious complications such as infection or limb loss.”

Hard-to-heal wounds often occur as a result of pressure, trauma or infection — and can lead to serious side effects, long-term health problems — and a poor quality of life for many patients.

Sometimes, even the simplest of wounds can turn into a significant problem due to underlying conditions such as diabetes, circulation problems, or previous radiation treatment. Our team of experienced wound care specialists will assess symptoms, determine the underlying cause of the non-healing wound and customize the most effective treatment plan to stimulate healing.

“Recognizing the need for this critical service in our community, WakeMed has assembled an expert team of wound care and amputation prevention experts,” explains Dr. Brian Futrell, co-director of WakeMed Wound Care — Cary and independent podiatrist with Foot & Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic. “The highly-coordinated approach to care patients receive here is unlike anything else available in the region.”

WakeMed Wound Care is located in the Medical Park of Cary at 210 Ashville Avenue, Suite 420. Wound care and specialty wound care appointments are available Monday through Friday.
