Giving birth and welcoming new life into the world is a very important time for new parents and their babies. Plus, it’s exhausting for everyone involved – especially new moms! That’s why WakeMed is introducing a new Family Bonding Time initiative this month. Aimed at giving new mothers the time they need to rest and recover physically from delivery while providing uninterrupted time for new parents to bond with their newborns, Family Bonding Time now occurs each day from 2 to 4 pm on all WakeMed postpartum units.
During this time, we will:
- Dim lights and decrease noise
- Decrease interruptions from staff unless new mothers request help or assistance
- Ask visitors to wait in the waiting room unless the new mother is expecting visitors
“Having a baby is an exciting yet overwhelming time for new mothers and families,” explains Deirdre Mattera, RN, clinical supervisor & educator, WakeMed Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace. “Setting aside just a few hours a day for an uninterrupted period of rest can have a positive effect on a mother’s ability to recover, while also promoting family bonding – which we know is critical for infant health and wellbeing.”
