A Very Scary Day: Preston’s Story

Preston was like every other teenager, participating in sports, and enjoying time with his family and friends. The only obstacle that stood in Preston’s way was his severe asthma. However, Preston never let his asthma come in between the sports he loved to play and outdoor activities he enjoyed with his siblings.

A Sudden Collapse

It wasn’t until that very scary day when Preston suddenly collapsed on his parent’s bedroom floor, unable to breathe, that the world flashed before his eyes — and his families.

A member of his school’s golf team and football team, Preston had just played in his very first golf match the day before. Preston and his family never would have guessed what would occur next.

Hope at WakeMed Children’s Hospital

Stefanie and Chris, Preston’s parents, although in shock, immediately called 911 when their son collapsed at their bedside. EMS quickly arrived on scene, stabilized Preston and took him to the local emergency department. He was later transferred to Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU) at WakeMed Children’s Hospital.

Life-saving Treatment in WakeMed’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

While in the PICU, Preston received life-saving treatment from his care team.

“We are truly thankful for all the staff, nurses, doctors and everyone at WakeMed,” says Stefanie.

After over a week in the PICU, Preston was able to begin rehabilitation so that he could get back home to living his normal, everyday teenage life.

“If it wasn’t for the heroes we have on the frontlines, our son would not be here with us today. Thank you for everything that you do,” says Stefanie.
