Coronary Artery Intervention and Complex CTO Program
WakeMed’s Complex PCI/CTO Program offers a specialized approach for patients with severe coronary artery disease and chronic total occlusion (CTO) — a complete or almost-complete blockage of a coronary artery.
And with a 94% clinical success rate, patients see improvement in overall health and quality of life in just weeks, which is why more CTO procedures are performed at WakeMed than at any other hospital in the state and surrounding region.
Structural Heart
Cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons are specially trained in the newest, most advanced interventions for structural heart conditions, including valve issues and closing holes between chambers in the heart. Specific procedures offered include:
MitraClip®
– A minimally invasive approach for patients who have severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and are not candidates for open heart surgery. MR occurs when the mitral valve leaks, causing blood to flow back into the lungs rather than the heart. The MitraClip is a small device that is placed in the mitral valve to help it close correctly and maintain normal blood flow.
TAVR
– Patients with severe aortic valve disease who are considered high risk for open-heart surgery have a less invasive option for treatment. Trans Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) delivers a new valve via a tube that is directed inside the heart — all while the heart continues to beat. WATCHMAN™
– A new device for patients with heart rhythm problems who are unable to take blood thinners. The tiny implant reduces the risk of bleeding and stroke-causing clots, so patients can enjoy a higher quality of life with the same stroke prevention benefits as a blood thinner.
Electrophysiology & Complex Arrhythmia
Heart rhythm problems can be scary. WakeMed Heart Center electrophysiologists pinpoint problems with your heart’s electrical system and offer many corrective treatments.
