10 Health & Safety Tips for Enjoying the North Carolina State Fair

state-fair-logoThis year’s North Carolina State Fair takes place from October 13 – October 23rd. It’s an exciting time of the year, filled with rides, food, livestock and other forms of entertainment.

We want you to enjoy everything that the State Fair has to offer, which is why we’re offering the following health and safety tips for fair goers.

Stay Healthy & Safe at the State Fair

#1 – Wear comfortable shoes.

There will be plenty to do and see at the State Fair, and most of it will require you being on your feet as you walk around. Therefore, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes. Choose shoes that offer good support, aren’t too tight on your feet, and are breathable. Your feet will thank you later!

#2 – Wash your hands FREQUENTLY.

Lots of people + animals + a public venue = a lot of germs. Therefore, you’ll want to:

  • Find out where the hand washing stations are located.
  • Always wash your hands immediately after coming into contact with animals/livestock (even if you didn’t touch the animals).
  • Bring hand sanitizers & disposable wipes with you, just in case.

#3 – Don’t overindulge in the food.

The State Fair is known for its interesting food concoctions. Feel free to enjoy some of the food, but do it in moderation. Try sharing food with a friend or family member to prevent overeating. Opt for healthier options, such as grilled versus fried.

#4 – Get your steps in.

Remember that first tip about wearing comfortable shoes? Take advantage of the 300+ acres at the State Fair. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to get those steps in!

#5 – Know what your kids are wearing.

It may be helpful to take a photo of your kids just before you leave for the State Fair. In the event that you get separated or something happens, you’ll have a photo showing exactly what they look like and what they are wearing.

#6 – Wear sunscreen; bring extra.

Contrary to what you may think, the sun can still do damage to your skin in the autumn and even on days when it is overcast! Be sure to apply sunscreen before you leave for the State Fair, and bring extra sunscreen so that you can reapply while you are there.

#7 – Dress appropriately.

Before you even leave your home, be sure to check the weather. In Raleigh, the weather can fluctuate from day to day, hour to hour!

#8 – Stay hydrated.

Before, during, and after you visit the State Fair, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Avoid sugary drinks and alcohol – which can have the opposite effect.

#9 – Consider food allergies.

If you’re not sure, ask the food vendors what’s in the food. If you’re still unsure as to whether something will be ok for you or your child to eat, avoid it. It’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s also helpful to know where the emergency medical areas are, just in case. View additional State Fair visitor info here.

#10 – Establish a special, family meeting place.

The State Fair attracts a huge crowd, and it is easy to get lost or separated from your friends/family. Before you start walking around, establish a special meeting place. If you are separated, everyone will know where to go.
