Founder, owner, and chocolatier of That’s Good Chocolate!, Mary Rountree, was inspired to name her business after a common exclamation that everyone would say after trying her chocolate for the first time. And though she’s only recently gotten into the Farmers Market scene, Mary has been making chocolate for more than two decades.
History of That’s Good Chocolate!
A former registered nurse, Mary retired after suffering a heart attack at the age of 37. She also lost her sense of smell several years ago, and as a result- Mary can’t taste anything. Despite her medical maladies, Mary hasn’t let that stop her.
On days when she’s feeling well enough, you can find her in her kitchen, making chocolate. Her husband is a huge help – assisting with everything from tasting the chocolate to loading and packaging the chocolates for distribution.
Among the crowd favorites include Mary’s Rocky Road clusters, truffles, and toffee – all made with Belgian chocolate. Mary shares her “sweet” story of how her business, That’s Good Chocolate!, started and what she hopes to accomplish.
A Business Born Out of a Hobby
That’s Good Chocolate! originally started as a hobby. I would make and take some chocolate pizzas to soccer games and other events. So, after the children were all grown and independent, one of the children suggested that we make it a business. In August of 2014, we made it legal.
On days when I’m feeling well, I get up, have breakfast, and take my medication. I then cover my hair, pull out the supplies and utensils and start making the chocolate!
While the chocolate is tempering, I cut ribbon or put the packaging labels on the bags. I then put together whatever variety of chocolate I’m making that day. I usually round things out by bagging the chocolate!
Visions for a Sweet Future
At the Farmers Market, we get to see people sample our product. The Farmers Market has also definitely helped us get the word out that we are here.
As far as what I want for our business – my goal is to have everyone in the world taste a piece of our chocolates. We put smiles on people’s faces, and that’s what I love the most.
You can visit Mary at the WakeMed Farmers Market, which takes place at the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, Tuesdays from now until August 23rd.
