WakeMed Provides Pediatric Services at Central Carolina Hospital

The youngest patients at Central Carolina Hospital (CCH) in Sanford, N.C., now receive 24/7 care by pediatric hospitalists from WakeMed Children’s Hospital.  Launched on September 1, the service supports CCH’s recently designated pediatric unit and is led by WakeMed’s board-certified pediatricians who specialize in caring for hospitalized children and infants.

WakeMed’s pediatric hospitalists will also attend at high-risk deliveries; care for healthy newborns and infants in the special care nursery; and provide on-site emergency department consultations as well as telephone consultations with community healthcare providers. WakeMed and CCH will work closely with community pediatricians to ensure care is coordinated between Sanford-area primary care physicians and CCH.

“Local doctors are integral partners with the hospitalists, so they know that patients and their families are receiving excellent care,” commented Doug Doris, CEO of CCH.

WakeMed was chosen for its expertise in caring for children of all ages, with a variety of illnesses and injuries not commonly seen in community hospitals. To help support the program, WakeMed welcomed three new pediatric hospitalists: Dr. Ann Scott Pate, Dr. Steven Pattishall and Dr. Jennifer Vick.

“WakeMed is honored to be working alongside the CCH team,” commented Mark Piehl, MD, MPH, medical director of WakeMed Children’s Hospital. “Our partnership helps ensure local families will not have to travel far to receive the best care possible, anytime they need it.”

Over the past month, WakeMed’s pediatric hospitalist team and the Center for Innovative Learning have trained nurses, physicians and support staff at CCH as they prepare to treat more kids than ever. CCH is the first community hospital to partner with the WakeMed Children’s Hospitalist program.  Learn more about this new partnership here.
