Wake Tech Community College recently dedicated a new Health Sciences Building located on their campus off Sunnybrook Road, adjacent to WakeMed Raleigh Campus. This new building demonstrates how integrated simulation and technology have become at all levels of health education.
In the past, a majority of traditional health education focused on classroom-based learning. In the home stretch of an educational career, students would finally be introduced to application-based learning – in other words, students were able to actually practice everything they had learned. Now, application-based learning is integrated from the beginning using human patient simulators.
For example, if an instructor is talking about IVs, students are now able to directly transition and practice IV starts in a controlled environment where making mistakes is OK. They practice when things go smoothly, and they are able to practice for more challenging situations.
The new Health Sciences building features a beautiful new lecture hall and multiple floors of simulated environments to train EMS, radiography techs and nurses. WakeMed’s Center for Innovative Learning and its simulation experts assisted with the design of the laboratories and helped train Wake Tech staff on conducting successful simulations and debriefs.
We would like to congratulate Wake Tech for opening this new facility which will mean so much to so many students and the patients they treat throughout their career. Many of WakeMed’s star employees are Wake Tech alum, and we look forward to a continued close relationship with the school to help educate and employ the next generation of healthcare providers.
