Dr. Harris, an orthopaedic surgeon and founding member of Wake Orthopaedics, was nominated by his peers and selected by the Dascomb Award committee, which includes doctors from WakeMed Faculty Physicians and community physicians. Recipients must have three or more years of clinical experience and exhibit leadership in establishing, maintaining and supporting clinical teaching programs at WakeMed.
An accomplished leader, Dr. Harris formerly served as medical director of Wake Orthopaedics and chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at WakeMed. Among his colleagues, Dr. Harris is known for setting high standards, both for himself and for the residents with whom he works. During his time at WakeMed, the UNC residents have also honored Dr. Harris with numerous teaching awards.
Dr. Harris is board certified and has a special interest in joint replacement surgery, including minimally invasive anterior total hip replacements. He performs fracture and trauma surgery for the extremities, pelvis and spine and adult reconstructive surgery for post-traumatic and degenerative conditions. The Dascomb Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and Care was established in honor of Dr. Harry Dascomb, a WakeMed infectious disease physician who was recognized for his bedside clinical and teaching skills and for his ability to provide compassionate patient care.
