Warm Garner Welcome for WakeMed

On Friday, September 7, the Garner community celebrated the groundbreaking of Wake County’s seventh emergency department, the WakeMed Garner Healthplex.

Garner Mayor Ronnie Williams, the entire town council, leaders from the business community and members of WakeMed’s administration scooped the first shovelfuls of dirt to mark the occasion.  They also enjoyed a barbecue lunch and a performance by the bluegrass band The Grasscats.

The WakeMed Garner Healthplex will be located on a 20-acre site off Hwy. 70, 1 mile east of Rand Road directly across from Agri-Supply.  It will feature a 12-bed full-service emergency department, and will be staffed by the same, board-certified emergency physicians that care for patients in WakeMed’s Level I Trauma Center on WakeMed Raleigh Campus.   An estimated 12,000 to 15,000 patients are expected to receive treatment in the WakeMed Garner Healthplex Emergency Department during the first year.

The facility will also feature lab and imaging services as well as physician offices, including Wake Specialty Physicians – Garner Primary Care and Wake Specialty Physicians – Carolina Cardiology.

WakeMed is investing an estimated $17 million to build the Garner Healthplex and will hire 75 employees to staff the facility.  The site will also serve as the base for WakeMed’s Air Mobile medical helicopter operations.

The facility should be open for patients beginning fall 2013.  See images from the groundbreaking here.
