Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are typically thought of as only impacting adults. But these diseases impact children too with similar symptoms found in adults, including:
- Cramps/abdominal pain
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Unexplained weight loss
- Rectal bleeding
- Loss of appetite
Diagnosis in children tends to be more difficult due to food allergies and/or frequent viruses that can cause similar symptoms. Since these diseases cause the body to have trouble absorbing nutrients, delayed diagnosis in children can actually stunt their growth and development.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program
In Wake County, we are fortunate to have a dedicated Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program to help diagnose and treat the special needs of children who have Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis. It is part of the program’s mission to raise awareness of the diseases in children and make connections between families dealing with a diagnosis of IBD.
