The Health Benefits of Blueberries & WakeMed Blueberry Festival

There are many reasons why you should be eating your blueberries on a regular basis!

#1 – Blueberries are full of fiber.

  • They are full of fiber.
  • One cup provides 14 percent of the recommended daily dose of fiber.
  • Fiber helps keep you regular, is heart healthy and may help you keep your cholesterol in check.

#2 – Blueberries are low in calories.

  • Once cup delivers only 80 calories and virtually no fat.

#3 – Blueberries are full of disease-fighting antioxidants.

Ranking the highest of any fruit for antioxidants, substances in blueberries called polyphenols (specifically the anthocyanins that give the fruit its deep blue hue) work to neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules linked to the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s.

#4 – Blueberries are packed full of vitamins and minerals.

One cup delivers nearly a quarter of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system. It’s also an excellent source of manganese which helps support bone growth and conversion of protein, fats and carbohydrates into energy
