Read and Feed is a local nonprofit program committed to assisting elementary school children from economically challenged homes learn to read and be academically successful. This is the third year that WakeMed has partnered with the program by providing food and employee volunteers.
This year, we supported the program at Powell Elementary School, located less than two miles from Raleigh Campus. Each week, 15 to 30 WakeMed volunteers visit the school and serve students a hot meal and spend time reading with them one-on-one or in small groups. At the end of each session, the children are provided with age-appropriate books they can take home to start their own personal library.
Read and Feed recently started a new initiative to partner with pediatricians to increase literacy. Read about this new program in a recent Triangle Business Journal story, and see our WakeMed volunteers in action below.
