The following message was distributed to all WakeMed employees on Friday from Retired Navy Rear Admiral and WakeMed Interim CEO Donald Gintzig.
Veteran’s Day is a very special day for the brave men and women who have stood up to protect our country, our rights, families and our Freedom. They have entered dangerous territory, faced enemies, braved inhospitable conditions, managed unpredictable situations and served as ambassadors for the United States of America.
It takes a remarkable person to volunteer to serve in the armed forces. They must be selfless and strong. They must be able to lead and to follow. They must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
We owe each of them a debt of gratitude, and we are fortunate to have hundreds of active and veteran service members among our ranks. There are more than 270 WakeMed employees, physicians and volunteers who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. We value the tremendous contribution these individuals make every day, and we are proud to employ such dedicated individuals.
Having recently retired from the Navy, Veteran’s Day holds a special place in my heart. To me there is no greater honor than to wear the cloth of our nation. As I reflect on the many outstanding individuals I have known throughout my career, I am awed by their tremendous sacrifice to ensure the security of our nation. It is also a reminder to me to share my appreciation and gratitude with these individuals and especially their families.
This Veteran’s Day, we will hold special ceremonies at Raleigh Campus and Cary Hospital to formally honor the armed service members among us. I encourage you to attend. If you are unable to join us for the formal recognition, take a moment to thank a service member for their contribution to our organization, community, state, nation and world. Another way to honor service members is to read the proclamation the President issued in honor of Veteran’s Day. It eloquently describes the important contributions of our United States Armed Forces.
