What’s New & Next at Cary Hospital This Fall

While it’s been a unique and challenging year for all of us as we continue to manage the COVID-19 pandemic, the good news is that we’re seeing very few patients with severe cases and for those we do see, advances and discoveries in treatment have come a long way since the spring.

As always, the health and safety of our patients and our employees remains a top priority as we navigate the new normal we’re facing. This fall, we’re fully prepared to care for patients with and without COVID-19.

Whether you are welcoming a new baby to the family, need to have surgery, seek emergency care, or need simple outpatient services such as lab or imaging studies – our teams have put great effort into ensuring you can get the care you need safely and conveniently.

The good news is that even amidst a global pandemic, WakeMed Cary Hospital continues to expand to meet the population growth we’re seeing in the southern and western Wake County area and throughout the region. In response, we’re moving full speed ahead to expand our hospital campus, while adding the specialized services needed to care for our growing community.

While I’m excited about the addition of two new floors with 40 new hospital beds and the development of two medical parks that are home to physician offices and outpatient services, highly-advanced treatments for stroke patients, and the development of new programs for hernia and wound care patients. WakeMed Cary Hospital is here to meet the health care needs of and your families and keep you close to home.

Here’s an overview of what’s new and next for WakeMed Cary Hospital.

What’s New?

Highly-Advanced Services for Stroke Patients

Earlier this summer, WakeMed Cary Hospital launched a new neuro thrombectomy program for stroke patients requiring mechanical thrombectomy. Using new, state-of-the-art biplane imaging equipment, the experts from Raleigh Neurosurgical Clinic and Raleigh Radiology can now perform life-saving procedures to remove a blood clot from a vein or artery at Cary Hospital.

These experts are supported by the excellent team of Cary Hospital’s cardiovascular specialists in the Heart & Vascular Lab and compassionate nursing staff. The biplane allows WakeMed Cary Hospital to provide a higher level of stroke care than ever before, eliminating the need for transferring patients to other facilities.

This month, a new telestroke program will provide our emergency department patients with 24/7 access to almost immediate neurological evaluation and consultation. Stroke patients will undergo neurological evaluation within 10 minutes of their arrival – which will help the clinical decision-making needed to get stroke patients the necessary interventions as quickly as possible. When it comes to stroke, time is brain, so this ability to speed up the evaluation and diagnosis processes means stroke patients will inevitably have better outcomes.

Medical Park of Cary

New Medical Park of Cary Opens This Month

This month, the new Medical Park of Cary opens just behind our campus at 210 Ashville Avenue.  This new, five-story building is 125,000 square feet and features a dozen WakeMed medical specialty offices. While the offices are opening in phases, by the end of this month our WakeMed Heart & Vascular/Cardiology, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Imaging & Lab, Urology, Urogynecology, OB/GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine offices as well as Imaging and Lab services will be open.

For your convenience, the building includes a coffee shop and WakeMed Outpatient Pharmacy on the first floor. Ultimately, the fifth floor will feature a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center. With more than 470 parking spaces (including a parking deck), getting in and out to see providers should be easy and convenient.

What’s Next?

Hospital Expansion

Work continues on our hospital expansion, which will add two new floors and 40 inpatient hospital rooms.  This expansion is slated for completion in the spring of 2021 and will allow us to care for more patients than ever to accommodate the growth in our community – as well as reduce wait times in our emergency department. Minor renovations throughout the hospital are also underway to modernize corridors, elevator landings and the ground floor to enhance the patient and visitor experience.

Hernia Program

WakeMed is developing a comprehensive Hernia Center program to help patients get a fully-integrated approach to care – from diagnosis and “prehab” to surgery and recovery. We’ll be the first in the region to introduce this unique, multi-disciplinary approach to caring for hernia patients with enhanced recovery protocols by offering a team of specialty-trained surgeons, physical therapists and care coordinators – all designed to ensure that patients get the advanced treatment they need as well as the physical therapy and strength training needed to help streamline recovery and prevent future reoccurrence.

Wound Care Program

Opening in spring 2021, WakeMed’s new Wound Care Center is designed to help patients dealing with chronic or non-healing wounds get the comprehensive care they need. Located in the new Medical Park of Cary, the center will include two hyperbaric oxygen chambers and offer patients a multidisciplinary team comprised of vascular surgeons, podiatrists, general and orthopaedic surgeons, specialized wound care nurses, and a dietitian – all designed to provide the highest level of care to help facilitate wound healing and avoid losing functionality in limbs.

New Sleep Center

Also in 2021, WakeMed will open a new and expanded, state-of-the art sleep center designed to help diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of sleep disorders. For the first time, our new sleep center will provide services for both adults and children.

HealthPark at Kildaire

Just on the other side of WakeMed Cary Hospital is another new medical office building under construction – the HealthPark at Kildaire. This location will be home to WakeMed Primary Care, Urgent Care, Pulmonology, Wake Orthopaedics and specialty services such as the new Sleep Center, WakeMed Rehab and Healthworks for Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Rehab.
